Permissions
Last updated: 19 October 2026
This page says which permissions The Local Network asks your device for, when, and why. It covers the website and, when it is available, our mobile app. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy and our Cookies page.
Our promise
- We are not spying on you. We ask for a permission only when you use a feature that needs it, and we tell you why at that moment.
- We never sell your data, never share it with advertisers, and never use your location to build an advertising profile.
- Saying no is fine. You can browse every page and read everything without allowing any permission. Only the feature that needs a permission is affected.
- No tracking in the background. The website only reads your location while the page is open on your screen. We do not follow you around.
- You are in charge. You can withdraw any permission whenever you like, in your browser or phone settings.
Location
When we ask: when you choose to check in at a place, or to see where you are on a trail. On a phone we also ask when you open your dashboard, so it can ask "Are you at this venue?". If you say no, we do not ask again.
Why: to confirm you are really at the place. When you tap to check in, we read your position once, at that moment, and check it is at the venue. When you are at a venue with its page or your dashboard open, we keep reading it about every 15 seconds until the venue's time has passed, then check you in automatically, as our app does in the background. Those readings are sent only for that check-in, and we ask you to confirm it the next time you open the app or site. We read nothing once the page is closed, and keep nothing unless a check-in is made. That is how we tell a visit from someone ticking off a place from their sofa.
Finding places near you: when you start a trail, you can press "Use my location" to list the places closest to you. We ask only when you press it. Your device works out the distances: your position is not sent to us and nothing is stored. If you have already said no to location for this site, we do not ask again, and you can search for a place instead.
What we keep: the readings taken during the check-in (position, how accurate it was, and the time) are stored with the check-in so it can be verified and, if you dispute a result, reviewed. They are kept as described in the Privacy Policy.
What we do not do: read your location when the page is closed; sell it; use it for advertising; show your movements to a venue or partner. Venues and partners see how many people checked in, not where you went before or after.
If you say no: you can still browse everything. You cannot check in by location, but a venue's check-in code can still be scanned where one is offered, and your location is still needed with that scan to confirm you are at the venue.
Camera
When we ask: only on the venue staff screen, when a member of staff scans a visitor's check-in code.
Why: to read the QR code. The picture is processed on the device to find the code and is not recorded, saved or sent to us. Only the code that was read is sent.
If you say no: staff can paste the code in instead. Visitors are never asked for the camera: scanning a venue's QR code with your phone's own camera app opens a link, and that app is your phone's, not ours.
NFC (tap to check in)
Tapping your phone on a venue's tag opens a link, which your phone handles. The Local Network does not read NFC in the background, and we do not read tags unless you tap one.
Notifications
We do not send notifications today. If we add them they will be optional, we will ask first, and they will never be advertising.
Photos and files
We can only see a photo or file you choose, such as a profile picture or a photo with a visit note. We never look through your photo library.
Things we do not use
We do not use your contacts, microphone, Bluetooth, health data, calendar, phone number or advertising identifier.
Changing your mind
Withdraw a permission in your browser's site settings, or in your phone's settings under The Local Network. The feature that needs it stops working until you allow it again, and nothing else changes. To remove data we hold, see your rights in the Privacy Policy.
