Cookies and storage
Last updated: 14 October 2026
You have not chosen yet, so only essential storage is used.
This page lists everything The Local Network keeps on your device, what each is for, and how to say no to what we do not need. Only three of these are cookies. The rest are small items kept in your browser's own storage, which the law treats in the same way, so we ask about both. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains how we use personal data.
Our promise
- We do not sell your data. Not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone.
- We use no advertising or tracking cookies. There are no advertising networks, social media pixels or third-party analytics on The Local Network.
- Declining never stops you browsing. Every page works if you only allow what is essential.
- Our reports are built from activity on the platform itself, such as check-ins, campaign entries and visits to a place, not from following you around the web. Venues and partners see counts. They see the name and email of people only for a campaign you chose to join and only while you remain in it. See the Privacy Policy.
Essential storage (always on)
These are needed for the site to work or for something you asked for, so they cannot be switched off. They are never used for advertising or to build a profile of you.
| Name | Kind | What it is for | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
tln_refresh | Cookie (HttpOnly, sent only to our sign-in service) | Keeps you signed in, so you do not have to enter your password on every visit. Set only when you sign in. | Up to 30 days, or until you sign out |
tln_verify | Cookie (HttpOnly) | Lets you enter the code we email you to confirm your address. Set only while you are joining or confirming. | 30 minutes |
tln-auth | Local storage | Remembers who is signed in on this device (your display name and picture) so pages show the right thing straight away. It holds no password and no access key. | Until you sign out |
tln-device-signing | Browser database | Holds a key for this device. Check-ins are signed with it, which is how we know a check-in came from your own device and cannot be copied by someone else. Only the public half is sent to us. | Until you remove the device or clear site data |
tln.checkin.outbox.v1 | Local storage | Keeps a check-in you made without a signal until it can be sent. | Until it has been sent |
tln_cookie_choice | Cookie | Remembers the choice you make about the storage below, so we do not ask you on every page. | 6 months |
tln_refresh, tln_verify and tln_cookie_choice, and all three are essential.Preference storage (only if you allow it)
These remember small things to make the site nicer to use. They are kept in your browser on this device, are not cookies and are not sent to us. If you choose Essential only, we do not set them, and any that were set on this device are removed.
| Name | Kind | What it is for | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
tln:stride_m | Local storage | Your walking stride, used to turn distances into steps. If you are signed in, your stride is also saved on your account as a profile setting, which this choice does not change. | Until you clear it |
tln-field-notes:… | Local storage | Which entries of a field guide you have read, which it stamps "Noted". They stay on your device and are never sent to us. Notes you write about a venue are different: they belong to your account. | Until you clear them |
tln_ticker_dismissed | Session storage | Remembers that you closed an announcement, so it does not reappear during this visit. | Until you close the tab |
tln-admin-nav-…, tln.editor.panelWidth | Local storage | For people who run the platform only: whether the console menu is collapsed and how wide the map editor panel is. | Until you clear them |
Your choices
- The first time you visit you are asked to choose Allow preferences or Essential only. There is one optional group, the preferences above, so there is nothing further to switch on or off. Both buttons are equally easy to press, and you can carry on browsing without choosing. Until you choose, we treat it as Essential only.
- Change your mind at any time with "Cookie settings" at the foot of every page.
- If you have an account, you can also change it in your profile, and your choice follows you to your other devices. Essential only never removes anything saved on your account, such as your profile settings: to remove those, edit them in your profile or see your rights in the Privacy Policy.
- You can also clear cookies and site data in your browser's settings. Essential storage will then be set again the next time you use the feature that needs it, such as signing in.
Third parties
The Local Network serves its own fonts, maps and images, and does not embed third-party widgets, so no other company sets cookies on our pages. If that ever changes we will list them here and ask you first.
How we measure how the platform is used
We do not measure use with cookies. The platform's own records (check-ins, campaign entries, which places are visited and when) feed the reporting that venues, partners and the Local Network team see. That reporting is counts, not a list of people's movements, unless you have joined a campaign that asks to share your name. You can leave a campaign at any time, which ends the sharing.
Changes to this page
If we change what we store we will update this page, and ask for your choice again if the change affects what you agreed to. Questions? Email info@thelocalnetwork.uk or use the contact form.
