The Plough
8-10 Dogs Head St, Ipswich, IP4 1AD
About
Dating back to the 17th century, The Plough has seen Ipswich change around it. Originally much larger, it was reduced in size in the late 1880s when Dog’s Head Street was widened for trams. It’s moved around the town centre over the years, but the spirit has always been the same: a proper pub for proper people.
Now: Today, you’ll find a large split-level main bar, a separate restaurant, and a beer garden that’s perfect for sunny days. The Long Room has been impressively refurbished and is now a non-smoking space. With up to nine regularly changing ales and real cider on offer, it’s a paradise for ale enthusiasts.
Why it works: Football fans love it on match days (it’s just 10 minutes from Portman Road), families love the Sunday roasts, and everyone loves the traditional pub atmosphere. The Sky Sports TV means you won’t miss the big game, and the occasional live music keeps the vibe lively.
This is a pub that’s evolved with the town but never lost its soul.
The Plough in a sentence: Nine ales, one great atmosphere, zero pretence.
